Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
EXPERIENCED SPECIALIST: I have practiced law for over 30 years. I am a Board Certified Specialist in Family Law and have practiced Collaborative Law since 2000. I help people get divorced in a peaceful and private process that is less stressful. I am also a mediator for Family Law issues.
What is your primary product or service?
PEACEFUL DIVORCES: I am an attorney and help people resolve family law issues either by litigation or Collaborative Law. We prefer Collaborative Law and mediation for resolving disputes. Both processes are private and confidential for people who don't want all their personal and financial information out in public. They are excellent tools for very difficult divorces, including child custody issues or complicated property issues. We are usually able to find creative solutions for what initially appear to be difficult custody or possession schedule conflicts. Complicated property issues, including professional practices, retirement accounts and other investments, can be very effectively handled using Collaborative Law or mediation.
CLIENTS: Our clients include many professionals and business owners and the spouses of professionals and business owners. We have helped several professional athletes with child support issues. We focus on our clients' specific needs and create customized solutions after a series of negotiations, rather than relying on standardized solutions or formulas.
DIVORCE OVER 50: We also work with many clients who have long-term marriages and who must re-enter the workforce while they are also realigning their personal lives. We have especially begun helping people with so-called "grey divorces", which are divorces for people later in life, usually after long-term marriages.
INFORMATION: For more information, please see our web site at www.pricelawfirmtx.com and our two blogs at www.texascollaborativelaw.blogspot.com and www.dick-price.blogspot.com.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
After practicing law for about 15 years, I began noticing that most Family Law cases ended in a settlement, sometimes by mediation and other times in less formal discussions. I had always been a trial lawyer. Lawyers focused on preparing for trial, but cases usually didn't go to trial, so I began learning more about negotiating. In 2000, I discovered Collaborative Law when it first appeared in Texas. I immediately became heavily involved in it and continue learning more about effective settlement techniques.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
BLOGS: My two blogs are probably unique in Texas. I have written the blogs for over nine years and they have been invaluable in providing free and useful information to clients and others. One blog is about Divorce and Family Law generally and the other is only about Texas Collaborative Law. No one else in Texas has written a blog that long and no one else has written a Collaborative Law blog in Texas.
HELPING YOU FIND THE RIGHT ATTORNEY: If you read some from my blogs, you can get a good idea about how I approach things and whether we would be a good fit for each other. If I don't think we would be the best attorney for you, I will recommend 3 or more other attorneys I know who would probably work for you. I would prefer to do that rather than have a dissatisfied client.
In addition, I am a Board Certified Specialist in Family Law. I was one of the first to be trained in Collaborative Law in Tarrant County and have practiced it for over 15 years. I am regularly listed in Texas Super Lawyers and the Top Attorneys in Tarrant County. Please check my web site for more details, if you are interested. I also frequently speak to bar associations and various other groups about Collaborative Law.
Finally, we offer a free half hour Collaborative Law consultation to explain how the process works. We compare Collaborative Law to litigation and mediation so people can make an informed decision about the better process to utilize for a divorce.
We also frequently get referrals from other attorneys who are out of state or out of county, as well as attorneys in Tarrant County.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We are located in downtown Fort Worth at 7th and Throckmorton in the Star-Telegram Building. We provide free parking in the attached parking garage. Directions to our office are on our web site and various directories.
We represent clients who live and work all over Tarrant County. In Collaborative cases, we have a series of meetings and generally pick meeting locations that are most convenient for all the parties involved.
Provide detailed directions to your location
See our web site for a map and directions, www.pricelawfirmtx.com We are easy to find at the corner of 7th and Throckmorton in downtown Fort Worth. There is free parking in a garage with an entrance at 8th and Throckmorton. Our web site also has directions to the office from various starting points.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept cash, checks and credit cards. Our preferred approach is to not take a retainer anymore, but instead to get authorization and just charge monthly on a credit card as expenses and fees are incurred. That allows our clients to not tie up a large sum of money as a retainer and it minimizes our bookkeeping. We can also work off a traditional retainer. The amount of retainer varies with the issues involved in the case. We normally set a retainer after the initial consultation.
Which areas do you service?
We represent people who live and work throughout Tarrant County. Occasionally, we represent Parker County residents in Collaborative cases. We would consider Collaborative cases in Johnson, Hood, Wise or Ellis Counties, as well.
If clients have cases in Dallas or other counties, we can refer them to a list of well-qualified attorneys we know or have located in other counties.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Dick Price
What are your hours of operation?
Our official hours are 9 to 5 Monday through Friday, but we are often here earlier and usually here later. You can call and arrange for a phone or in-person appointment at various times.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
That I helped a client get through a very difficult time and they are pleased with the result.
